Beginning our third year of existence, planning and upgrading of the LTCV operation, required our members to discuss the viability and implementation of some needed adjustments and tweaking. We have added some new procedures, as well as, modified some existing practices.
To be more specific, we have added or tweaked the following:
- Created several social media sites in order to provide a variety of communication mediums for our members.
- Scheduled the frequency rate of pickup events to cycle at 20- to 22-day intervals. This modification will allow us to increase our number of scheduled pickups by thirty-three percent.
- Developed and implemented a rolling event schedule which will provide members with advance notification encompassing a three-month time period. This will allow member’s to pre-plan if desired, while at the same time, allow others to look at individual roster dates and commit if volunteers are needed for an upcoming event.
- We have added a post Pickup “luncheon gathering” for the specific purpose to allow participants the opportunity to interact with one another in order they become more acquainted with each other. Sharing thoughts and ideas as it relates to a common effort among participants, makes for a more cohesive and focused group.
We completed our first 2023 Litter Pickup Event on Tuesday, March 7th. We chose a road that we have picked up previously as it is relatively flat and doesn’t have steep right-of-way drop-offs. Five members, four veterans and one new member were on the roadway and picked up 3.4 miles of Cullman County Road 201. The group was accompanied by a lead safety vehicle followed by a Cullman County Sheriff’s Deputy. The event lasted just a little over the scheduled two-hour time frame and resulted in the LTCV effort, collecting 725 pounds of litter. The weather was cooperative and the vehicular traffic was what we anticipated. The event went smoothly as our Procurement Committee had our Litter Crew signs placed strategically with all the necessary pickup tools on hand.
Our post-event luncheon was terrific! Our sponsor’s, S&S Foods – Dodge City, Alabama & Smith Lake RV & Cabin Resort provided a scrumptious meal, complete with sandwiches, fresh veggies, fruit and dessert. Our LTCV Luncheon Committee members set up and served the meal at the Cullman County Sheriff’s West Side Field Office in Crane Hill, AL.
The LTCV has their next event scheduled for March 28th where we will pick up Cullman County Road 946 between the Cullman County Sheriff’s West Side Field Office in Crane Hill and Williams Bridge.
