I am a retired Computer Engineer living currently in the Smith Lake area. I worked for the US Army at Redstone Test Center on Redstone Arsenal as a civilian employee for 35 years and as a government contractor for 8 years. Married to my wonderful wife, Renee, for 41 years and have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. We lived in Decatur, Alabama for 39 years, but decided to move to the Smith Lake area when I neared retirement.
I have participated with LTCV since 2022. I was first introduced to LTCV in early 2022 at a community promotional meeting. Initially, I was concerned that my arthritis in my knees would not allow me to participate on pickup teams. After my initial pickup, I was no longer concerned. I was able to rest whenever I needed. And breaks were provided for the whole team as needed. And was so pleased after the pickup that the road looked so much better.
After attending several pickups, it was obvious that safety was the number 1 concern of the organization. The Cullman County Sheriff’s department provides a deputy to stop and move traffic away from the pickup team. The policies and procedures provided by LTCV makes sure that volunteers are comfortable prior to attending and makes the pickup to be more efficient and safe.
Many of the roads around Smith Lake are littered with way too much trash. There are so many roads, the sheriff’s department cannot use the prison system to pick up on all these roads. The LTCV organization is there to fill in the cracks. I am so proud to be a part of this organization and the good work they are doing for Cullman County and the Smith Lake area. If you would like to help out with this effort, please contact the team and get more involved in this wonderful effort.
